Daniel Jones Vikings Rumors: The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly one of the top contenders to sign free-agent quarterback Daniel Jones.
As per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers are a "viable contender" to land Jones. He is seeking a move to a "stable, winning franchise" and has expressed interest in working with head coach Kyle Shanahan, known for his success with quarterbacks.
Fowler also mentioned that ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported interest from the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens in Jones.
The New York Giants selected Jones as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played six seasons in New York, with a 24-44-1 record in 69 regular-season starts. His 2022 season, under new head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, was a breakthrough. He threw for 3,205 yards, totaling 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 708 yards and scored seven touchdowns.
That year, the Giants finished 9-7-1, made the playoffs, and stunned the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round. However, 2023 was a different story for Jones. A torn ACL kept him sidelined for only six games. In his 10 starts this season, he posted a 2-8 record, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
The 49ers appear to be an ideal landing spot for Jones, especially considering the career paths of quarterbacks like Sam Darnold. Darnold was the No. The New York Jets selected him as the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. After struggling with the Jets and the Carolina Panthers, Darnold signed with the 49ers in 2023 as a backup to Brock Purdy. While Darnold made only one start and had limited action, his time working with Shanahan made him attractive in free agency, leading the Minnesota Vikings to sign him.
Darnold’s resurgence with the 49ers has been impressive. He has a 9-2 record in 11 starts this season, throwing for 2,717 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Jones, aware of Darnold’s success, could see the 49ers as a similar opportunity to revive his career.
Despite a challenging season for the 49ers, who are 5-6 due to injuries, they are still just one game behind the NFC West lead. Last week, Purdy missed a loss to the Green Bay Packers due to a shoulder injury, leaving journeyman backup Brandon Allen to start. If Jones were to join the team, he would provide a solid backup option, and with Purdy's shoulder injury uncertain, Jones could even get a chance to start down the stretch.
Other teams, such as the Vikings and Ravens, also offer promising opportunities for Jones. Both teams are playoff contenders, with Minnesota at 9-2 and Baltimore at 8-4. If something were to happen to either Darnold or Lamar Jackson, Jones would be in a favorable position with a strong supporting cast in both Minnesota or Baltimore.
Jones’ next move will be crucial for his career, and these three teams offer him significant chances to succeed.
