Devin White Injured: "Devin White Injured," the Philadelphia Eagles' new-look linebacking corps will be without him for the season opener. The team announced on Wednesday that White has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Green Bay Packers due to an ankle injury. According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Nakobe Dean was already set to start at the Mike linebacker spot, even before White appeared on the injury report this Tuesday.
McLellan said it's "unclear" what role White will have on the defense.
The Eagles' off-ball linebackers were a mess last year after losing T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White in free agency after the 2022 season. Nicholas Morrow and Zach Cunningham were their primary starters, but they brought in Shaquille Leonard late in the season while they tried to find someone who could give them competent play.
Dean was touted as a third-round draft pick in 2022 due to his stellar play at Georgia, including the Butkus Award in 2021, but injuries limited him to five games last season. He played only 34 defensive snaps as a rookie.
In an effort to supplement his linebackers for the upcoming season, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman signed White as a free agent. Over the last five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he achieved a notable milestone by securing a place on the All-Pro Second Team in 2020.
White's speed is a real game-changer, especially in blitz and pass-rush situations. After missing three games last season with a foot injury, he came back strong and was solid in coverage. It looks like new Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn’t plan on relying heavily on White in Week 1, so giving him time to fully recover is the smart move.
The downside is that they're losing depth at the position against an opponent that likes to attack the middle of the field. Jordan Love's ascension last season coincided with him throwing between the numbers more often. On Friday, when the Eagles and Packers play the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil, Dean and Zack Baun will be responsible for defending that area of the field.
