Trevis Gipson: Trevis Gipson has joined the Seattle Seahawks in a move that could signal a significant shift as NFL teams finalize their 53-man rosters by Tuesday. Acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday, the Seahawks sent a late-round pick in return, as reported by NFL Network. The absence of specific details about the pick suggests it might be conditional, likely tied to Gipson’s playing time and performance.
The move comes after the Seahawks saw the leader of their pass rush/outside linebacking corps, Uchenna Nwosu, exit with a knee injury on the first series of Saturday night's preseason win over the Cleveland Browns.
No additional information has been provided on Nwosu's status since coach Mike McDonald spoke to reporters after the game, saying the team needs additional tests before knowing anything.
"We'll get it checked out tomorrow," McDonald said Saturday night. "We'll probably have more information in the next couple of days."
The addition of the 6-foot-4-inch, 263-pound Gipson could be insurance in case Rush end Dre'Mont Jones isn't ready for Week 1.
Jones has practiced sparingly in training camp because of a hamstring injury, and hasn't played in any of the Seahawks' three preseason games.
Jones returned to practice the week of joint practices in Tennessee before the preseason game at Nashville on Aug. 17, but left one of the drills early and hasn't been on the field since.
"It looks positive and we're optimistic with DrayMont," McDonald said Saturday night. This week, we'll see how many reps he gets and how we can build on that.
Adding Gipson could be a way for the Seahawks to fill the depth they lost after trading Darrell Taylor to the Bears on Friday for a sixth-round pick in 2025.
Gipson, 27, had 10 sacks in 19 starts with the Bears over the 2021 and 2022 seasons, including seven in 2021.
He was let go before the 2023 season began and then joined the Tennessee team. He played eight games with Tennessee in 2023 as a depth and rotational pass rusher, getting one sack. He also played two snaps on special teams in the Titans' Christmas Eve loss to the Seahawks in Nashville.
In March, Gipson signed a one-year deal worth up to $1.152 million with Jacksonville, which Seattle now inherits.
According to Pro Football Focus, Gipson played 59 snaps in the preseason with the Jaguars, getting no sacks but four pressures and two hurries, giving him a 73.0 pass rush grade.
Gipson, who grew up in Cedar Hill, Texas, played his college football at Tulsa.
Alongside Nwosu and Jones, the Seahawks seem confident in Derick Hall and Boye Mafe to lock down the rush end/outside linebacker spots.
Rookie Jamie Sheriff has been a pleasant surprise, notching three sacks in the last two preseason games. But for now, the Seahawks might see him as a better fit for the practice squad.
Teams must finalize their rosters to 53 players by 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
