Here’s what you need to know about a potential playoff for gold in Paris.

Paris 2024 Olympic Golf: Playoff rules and gold tie details.

Olympic Golf playoff structure

The final round leaderboard at the 2024 Olympics is stacked, with Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and several other star players. Given that, a playoff is entirely possible.

To start, any golf playoff at the 2024 Olympics will take place over three holes at Le Golf National: the 168-yard, par-3 16th; the 480-yard, par-4 17th; and the 471-yard, par-4 18th.

Unlike PGA Tour tournaments, where only one winner is to be determined in a playoff, the Olympics require three winners to be identified for the gold, silver, and bronze medals.

So a few different scenarios can arise. If two players are tied for first place at the end of regulation, they will compete in a playoff, with the winner earning a gold medal and the loser earning silver.

If three players are tied for the lead, medals will be awarded based on their performance in the playoff, with third place receiving a bronze medal.

But there are also more complex scenarios. For example, there might be a clear winner at the end of the day, while several players are tied for second place. In that case, the winner wins the gold medal and the tied second-place players will play off in a playoff for silver and bronze.

How would a tiebreaker for the Olympic playoffs operate?

If any potential playoff is still undecided at the end of the first three playoff holes (16, 17, 18), the remaining players will continue to play those holes until all medalists have been determined.

Previous Olympic golf playoffs

Despite golf only being added to the Olympic Games in 2016, there has already been an Olympic golf playoff.

It happened at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. At the end of regulation, Schauffele was alone at the top of the leaderboard as the gold medalist, and Rory Sabatini was alone in second place, giving him a silver medal without a playoff. But seven players were tied for third place.

Those seven players – McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama – competed in a seven-way playoff, with C.T. Pan ultimately emerging victorious as the bronze medalist.
