Kaitlyn Dever: Kaitlyn Dever has faced some serious heat for playing Abby in 'The Last of Us' Season 2. It’s crazy how people can have such strong feelings about a character who isn’t even real.

According to her co-star Isabella Merced, Dever needed extra security on the set of the HBO series to keep some overzealous (in a pun intended) game fans away. Merced suggested that it wasn't because Dever, who was cast in January 2024, wasn't up to the job, but because some gamers actually dislike the fictional character Abby.

Kaitlyn Dever receives backlash from 'Last of Us' fans over her character portrayal.

Merced pointed out on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast that it's strange how some people genuinely dislike Abby, even though she's not real. "Kaitlyn had to be extra protected by security when it came to filming this."

Of course, another word for it would be "strange."

In “The Last of Us Part II” video game, Abby co-leads the gang with Ellie (Bella Ramsey in the series); players in the game alternate between the perspectives of both characters. Abby is a soldier caught in a conflict between her own post-apocalyptic militia and a religious cult. Over the course of the game, Abby becomes embroiled in the conflict with Ellie’s own quest for revenge and survival.

Without giving away any spoilers, Abby is responsible for some of the biggest drama moments in “Part II,” so her character has become a bit polarizing. And then there are the misogynists online who hate simply because the (again, fictional) character isn’t more conventionally attractive. We’re not done yet, as there’s a third sect that for some reason has spread speculation that the character is trans (she’s not).

However, what Merced found confusing was that "The Last of Us" creator Neil Druckmann is the co-creator of the series with Craig Mazin, so it's puzzling that fans of Druckmann's own source material would now have a problem.

"What confuses me is the creators and producers of a video game, they work together to make it, so if you like what that person made and he's making more of it, why are you upset?" Merced said. "I'm too much of an opinionated person to be on Twitter. I see all of this on Twitter, and it makes me want to be Cardi B on them."

Dever in particular faced criticism for her casting. The video game Abby has a muscular and more masculine figure, and some gamers felt Dever was too young for the role.

The good news is that Merced said Dever can handle it.

Referring to the recent death of Dever's mother, Merced said, "Kaitlyn is a really good person who doesn't get upset about anything. Her mind was in the right place and she's going through a lot personally right now." "It's really sad to see, but honestly, she deserves an Emmy too. I'm so excited for people to see how great Bella and Kaitlyn have done on this."

Merced, who is promoting her role in "Alien: Romulus," is currently shooting "The Last of Us" Season 2 for HBO, which is set to return in 2025. She plays Dina, the girlfriend of Ramsey's Ellie. She said that making the post-apocalyptic show can be pretty tough.

"Every day on set is challenging," she said. "It's a show about fungus. It's not glamorous by any means. It's tough subject matter and conversations, and fear is one of the main emotions we experience throughout the show."

Along with Merced and Dever, 'The Last of Us' Season 2 introduces a stellar new cast, including Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Wright, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, and Danny Ramirez.
