Chiesa: Chiesa was a major focus for Liverpool this summer, with many, including Arne Slot, expecting the team to sign a new central midfielder. Slot’s style, which relies on strong possession, seemed to require a ball-playing number six like Martin Zubimendi. However, when the Zubimendi transfer fell through, Liverpool quickly changed direction. The club is now reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Federico Chiesa from Juventus for about €15 million, after also securing goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. These unexpected moves have caught many off guard.
Chiesa has proven himself at the elite level. He was arguably Italy's best player as the Azzurri won Euro 2020 and he could have achieved even more at Juventus if not for a series of injuries and fitness issues. Talent has never been an issue for the 26-year-old, who now appears destined for the Premier League.
Of course, Liverpool already have a wealth of wide attackers. Mohamed Salah has started the season strongly with two goals in two games, while Luis Diaz is the preferred option to slot in on the left side of the frontline. Darwin Nunez is also capable of playing in wide positions having played there under Jurgen Klopp.
In theory, Chiesa should be a good option for Liverpool. He likes to stretch the pitch and come in from the back, just like Diaz and Salah. At 26 years old, he moves swiftly and covers a lot of ground effortlessly. He is also a wide man who likes to attack from the inside rather than stay out on the touchline. This has led to Chiesa being deployed as part of a front two for Italy and Juventus in the past.
Even so, Liverpool fans have every right to question the club's direction this summer. New sporting director Richard Hughes failed to deliver the one player Liverpool needed more than anyone else. Ryan Gravenberch is having to play at the base of midfield in the slot because no one else in the squad is capable of doing so.
Chiesa's addition might give Liverpool another option, but the Italian would not bring about a significant change by any means. His signing would not help Liverpool close the gap they have created behind Manchester City and Arsenal. Slott might still manage to mold Liverpool in his own image, but the Reds' summer transfer business, even if Chiesa signs, would not do much to facilitate that change.
