Richard Simmons: Richard Simmons, the beloved fitness icon famous for his cheerful workouts in the 1980s, has reportedly passed away, as multiple sources have confirmed.
Between 1980 and 1984, Richard Simmons was the lively host of his own show, "The Richard Simmons Show," dedicated to helping people improve their personal health and fitness journeys. The program won four Daytime Emmy Awards.
Simmons was also known for his aerobic exercise videos, including 1988's "Sweatin' to the Oldies" and subsequent versions in 1990 and 1991.
From there, and thanks to his impeccable smile and playful personality, Simmons capitalized on his early stardom to become a regular on all sorts of TV shows, from "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" to game shows including "Match Game" and "The New Hollywood Squares." He also appeared on late-night shows hosted by Jay Leno and David Letterman in the '90s and 2000s.
Just this week, Simmons celebrated his 76th birthday.
"I'm really surprised by how many birthday messages I've received! It's really touching to see so many people thinking of me. Thank you all!" Simmons wrote in a post shared on X on Friday. "I'm sitting here writing emails. Have a wonderful Friday. Love, Richard."
He has remained out of the public eye in recent years, but his whereabouts and circumstances surrounding his well-being have generated considerable discussion on the Internet.
Occasionally, Simmons shared personal updates on his social media pages, writing in a Facebook post in January, "I just try to live a quiet life and stay peaceful."
Most recently, he spoke to People about his 76th birthday on Friday. He joked that he was going to celebrate by blowing out birthday candles “on a zucchini,” in keeping with his history as an advocate for good health and self-care.
Simmons shared, "Today is amazing! I'm really thankful for another day to be alive." He continued, "On my birthday, I'll be doing what I love most—helping people, just like I do every day."
