Kimberly Cheatle: United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle confessed that they failed to protect Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at his July 13 campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Speaking candidly before the House Oversight Committee, Cheatle said, "We failed. As the director of the United States Secret Service, I’m completely responsible for any security oversights."

She said, "The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 is the Secret Service's greatest operational failure in decades."

She also said that after the assassination attempt, the level of security has been increased before the operation and it is constantly increasing as the threats increase. "Our mission is not political. It’s a life-or-death situation, plain and simple."

Calls grow for Secret Service chief's resignation

"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, posted on X, saying, 'The nation needs answers and accountability. Bringing in new leadership at the Secret Service is a vital step in that direction.' House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., also took to X to urge President Biden to fire Cheatle immediately, highlighting the recent tragedy and the close call with President Trump as reasons, and added, 'This is simply unacceptable.' Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., stated on Saturday that 'new evidence has uncovered serious operational failures,' and he would lose confidence in Cheatle’s leadership if she remains in the position."

Cheatle, who Democratic President Joe Biden appointed to the position in August 2022, said in an interview with ABC News last week that she would not step down, and on Monday plans to emphasize the agency's plans to cooperate with a series of investigations into how the agency failed to stop the shooter.

The events of July 13

Trump was taken to a safe location after gunshots rang out in the crowd during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was seen bleeding from his right ear when he was removed from the stage after being shot.

The suspect and at least one attendee died, while two others were injured during the incident, according to a White House spokesperson.

Later, Trump released a statement saying he was "fine" and was being checked out at a medical facility. "The moment I heard a loud bang, almost like a gunshot, and then felt the bullet tearing through my skin, I knew something was seriously wrong," Trump said. "The bullet went into the top of my right ear," he added. Anthony Guglielmi from the Secret Service shared the news on social media.

"On the evening of July 13, an event occurred at Trump's rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has taken all necessary precautions to keep the former president safe and secure. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available," Guglielmi said on X.
