Joe Burrow vs. Mahomes: Four-Year Cash Flow Battle

Joe Burrow: Joe Burrow's rise has come at a time when quarterback salaries are skyrocketing, with many players now earning over $50-$53 million a year. This surge has left fans scratching their heads, especially since Patrick Mahomes, often considered the NFL’s best quarterback, isn’t even in the top 10 for “new money APY.” But there's a reason behind this.

Mike Florio from Pro Football Network recently explained why Mahomes and the Chiefs aren’t losing sleep over these huge deals. According to NFL on CBS, Florio talked about the current cash flow and said, “From 2023 to 2026, his cash flow is higher than anyone else in the league. Even now, after Tua and Jordan Love signed their deals, Mahomes is still No. 1 in cash flow from 2024 through 2027 at $215.6 million.” So, while Mahomes might not top the new money charts, his overall earnings keep him at the forefront.

As Mike Florio pointed out, the numbers don't lie. Mahomes is set to receive $215.6 million from 2024 to 2027, which would put him at the top of the QB money pile. That figure is ahead of other high earners like Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, Jared Goff and Tua Tagovailoa, even though their average annual value appears to be higher.

Florio explored the complexities of NFL contracts by looking at the deals for Love and Tagovailoa. Even with the same agent, these quarterbacks ended up with very different contracts. Tua will actually make $100,000 more than Love over the next four years, even though Love's average annual salary is $1.9 million higher.

Still, Florio couldn’t stop himself from questioning the quarterback’s decision to sign a 12-year extension. He suggested Mahomes should consider re-entering contract talks as soon as possible to try and push the Chiefs into giving him a new deal.

Does Mahomes Think He's Being Underpaid?

While fans and analysts are concerned about Patrick Mahomes potentially being underpaid, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is perfectly happy with his financial situation. Even though other signal-callers have surpassed him in average annual value, Mahomes isn't about to panic.

In a candid conversation with USA TODAY Sports following Chiefs training camp on Sunday, Mahomes explained:

"It’s fantastic for quarterbacks, but honestly, it’s a game-changer for every position out there. I know whenever a contract comes out, everybody looks at my APY (average per year) and everything like that. I'm doing pretty well myself. For me, it's just about trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I think I’m really on top of that."

However, Mike Florio's explanation gives valuable insight into why Mahomes isn't thinking about a new deal. Seeing a player of Mahomes' caliber not at the top of the highest-paid list naturally raises eyebrows among fans.

Many believe Mahomes deserves $65-75 million per year if others are making $55 million. After all, since becoming a starter in 2018 (his second year as a pro), Mahomes has never failed to lead the Chiefs to at least the AFC title game. So even if the QB's new deal isn't close yet, he has performed better than the contract he signed in 2020 by all parameters.
